Course Description

Hand building ceramic clay is a magical way to educate the imagination! In this three hour workshop, we will explore the making of any requested cup, pot, bowl or try and see that the piece you create is finished with a glaze of your choice. All that's needed is a basic fascination for ceramic clay and a willingness to follow your instructor's lead to discover your innate talent for creating with clay. Required Supplies

If participants have basic clay hand building tools, they are encouraged to bring them.
1. Basic clay tools to include: clay scalpel or knife, needle tool, pony roller, scoring tool, Teflon ribs, hand building mat or canvas, brush for slurry, wood carving & sculpting tools
2. An assortment of textures for impressing such as rubber stamp mats, fabrics, etc.
3. Newspaper sheets, small plastic bags & dry cleaner plastic
4. Cloth hand towel or small terry cloth towel
5. Ruler (preferably an 18” clear drafting style or sewing style)
6. Clay is supplied by the art center

Barbara Hanselman's Website I started my adventure in clay 20 years ago and am recognized by my hand built whimsical pots and terra sigillata enhanced ceramic clay beads. My clay work has been acknowledged with awards at Strictly Functional Pottery Nationals and the Pennsylvania Guild Exhibitions in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and at several area art center shows. Lark Books chose two of my bowls to appear in their 2003 publication, "500 Bowls" and selected my transfer printed bowl, “What’s in a Word…” to appear in their 2006 publication, “Image Transfer on Clay.” My classes/workshops on Clay Hand Building Techniques, Clay Rattles and Making Beads in Clay are offered at local art centers and my clay work is available for purchase online as well as through select galleries.
