“Keeping Pastel Fresh” Learn to create fresh pastel paintings that do not look overworked. You will work with combining blended and unblended applications in your work, layering and staying loose while concentrating on larger shapes first.

Open to all levels.

  • You will be working from your own Photo references. Please bring some reference photos that you have taken and would like to paint. Please do not bring “photo books” with images from other photographers. Personal photos provide a map of your memories.
  • Materials List:
  • REQUIRED
  • • Photo reference of a landscape (something you took)
  • • Bring set of soft or hard pastels (any brand or mix - Sennelier, Unison, Terry Ludwig, Nu Pastels, etc...)
  • • Please bring paper of your choice (Canson sanded, Wallis, Art Spectrum, UART, or other) I suggest sanded paper, any brand, however so that you can layer.
  • • Gloves or Glove lotion (it is recommended that you use one or the other for skin protection) (“Gloves in a Bottle” or any mechanic’s barrier cream from Pep Boys works nicely also)
  • • Sketching Board with clip to hold paper
  • • Tortillons (cylindrical drawing tools can be found in AC Moore, Michaels and all other art supply stores)
  • • Container for alcohol or water
  • • Soft bristled inexpensive paint brush (oil/acrylic) something that you will only use for your pastels
  • • Isopropyl alcohol, mineral spirits or water
  • • Artists Tape
  • OPTIONAL
  • • Willow or Vine Charcoal for sketching
  • • Glassine, Tracing or Wax Paper (in a pinch) for protecting your art
  • • Fixative (optional) (we can't spray in the studio, only outside, unless you use Spectrafix)
  • • Watercolors (cheap – grays, blacks, browns, blues)
  • NOTES ON MATERIALS:
  • Recently there has been difficulty in finding Wallis Sanded Pastel Paper. I suggest that if you have worked with Wallis in the past the UART 400 / 500 is similar and is easy to find.
  • Also, Isopropyl alcohol can be found at the Dollar Stores, for you guess it, 1 dollar.
