Can’t make it to Trinidad this summer? You can still learn to play an amazing instrument invented there—the steel drum! Join us for a week long steel drum camp. Participants will learn all about steel drums including how and why they were invented, the various kinds that make up an orchestra, how they are made and how they are played. Instructor Dave Gettes is a full time professional steel drum maker and performer with 35 years experience. Drummers have an opportunity to play various types of professional quality steel drums. You will learn steel drum playing fundamentals and techniques while exploring Caribbean rhythms and songs. At the conclusion of the class the group will perform a steel orchestra concert complete with a Trinidadian style “Engine Room” (the percussion section accompanying steel drums). This class will be fun, and will make you want to dance the limbo all day long as you are immersed in a unique musical art-form. No prior musical experience required. Just bring positive vibes!
