Can’t make it to Trinidad this summer? You can still learn to play an amazing instrument invented there—the steel drum! Join us for a week long steel drum camp. Participants will learn all about steel drums including how and why they were invented, how they are made, and how they are played!

This years Steel Drum camp will be different from the past two summers.

Instructor David Gettes is a full time, steel drum maker and performer, and is a co-inventor of the “Jumbie” Steel Drum. This 16-inch diameter, professional quality steel drum instrument was designed specifically to inspire “new” musicians, and will be used in the camp. Each participant will play on their own drum, adjusted to their specific height. David’s passion for teaching Steel Drums is contagious and this experience will be highly educational in addition to being fun.
This camp program is designed for children 6-11 years old. Campers will learn to play several island songs representing the various rhythms played throughout the Caribbean (Reggae, Calypso, and Soca). The group will present a short performance on the last day of the camp. The drums used in the camp will be available for purchase should your child wish to continue learning and playing after the camp ends. No prior musical experience is required; campers just need to bring a smile, snack, and positive vibes!
