Designed around Sasha Prood's 3rd book Pencil Workshop: Develop Your Sketching Skills in 50 Experiments, this one day course will bring a sense of experimentation and fun to sketching with graphite, colored, and watercolor pencils. Students will receive a copy of her book as a part of tuition, to start using in class, and to continue to learning from after the course is complete.

During this workshop, Prood will cover introductory techniques like hatching, contouring, and stippling, as well as more advanced skills like building textures, introducing gradients and contrast, and the use of blending tools. Students will start off the day developing a series of swatch tests to reference when creating future work. During the second half of the class, students can move on to developing small compositional studies, further practicing their skills. These swatch tests are small studies will make beautiful framed wall art as well!

  • This is an online class presented using Zoom. Online Zoom class information will be sent to you upon your registration. Zoom is free and easy to use! The CAC will provide you with information on how to use Zoom.
  • - A range of graphite pencils, colored pencils, and watercolor pencils (feel free to bring experimental pencils too)
  • - Blending tools (a blending pencil, a water-based blending marker and an alcohol-based blending marker, a blending stump, and any other blending tools you would like to bring, including blending powder, solvent and a paint brush, etc.)
  • - Standard eraser & kneaded eraser
  • - Pencil sharpeners (colored and watercolor pencils need a special sharpener, separate from your graphite sharpener, the CAC will have extra graphite sharpeners for use)
  • - Ruler
  • - Drawing paper

Sasha Prood is an illustrator and graphic designer from Philadelphia, PA. Currently based out of Brooklyn, NY, she runs a small studio specializing in hand-drawn and hand-painted designs. Sasha is the author of a medium-focused art workbook series, developed with Abrams Noterie. Her first book, Watercolor Workshop: Learn to Paint in 100 Experiments and its corresponding products, a journal, notebook, and notecards came out early '18. Her second book, Marker Workshop: Learn to Ink in 50 Experiments launched early '19. And her newest book, Pencil Workshop: Develop Your Sketching Skills in 50 Experiments will release early '20. Sasha has grown her creative skills at several institutions. She is an alumni of Carnegie Mellon's School of Design, The Cooper Union's typeface design program Type@Cooper, and the School of Visual Arts' MFA Design, entrepreneur program. Sasha has received awards, including HOW Magazine, Graphis, and Typism honors, and being named a Print Magazine 20 under 30: New Visual Artist. Her work has been published in collaboration with HarperCollins, Penguin Random House, WIRED UK, Food & Wine, Bergdorf Goodman, Madewell, BBH New York, VSA Partners, The Original Champions of Design, and Milton Glaser Inc. Sasha has taught and spoken internationally, ranging from working with kids in local art programs, to teaching workshops at TYPO Berlin, to lecturing at the Type Directors Club. Additionally, her art has shown worldwide, exhibiting in Brooklyn's “Early Bloom” and Stockholm's “Den Franska Våren.” Sasha's designs have also been featured in various publications including Gestalten's "Los Logos 7," Chronicle Book's “The Little Book of Lettering,” Real Simple Magazine, Computer Arts Magazine, Oh Joy!, and Design*Sponge.
