Pop Art began as a protest to the rise of popular American culture-and an explosion of consumer products: TV, movies, billboards, factory produced items, fast food, etc.

This new colorful art was recognizable, meaningful and often fun. Later, artists responded to politics and the Vietnam war. Some artists of this time were: Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Dine, Wayne Thiebaud and Claus Oldenburg (His giant clothespin sculpture is in Philadelphia!). Can you guess the meaning?

In our class, we will work with a variety of media: paint, sculpture, collage and more to express your ideas. One of our projects will be a Pop Art cupcake. Students will choose other projects from a selection of options. Think of what these artists may do if they were living in 2022 with access to technology and social media! Join us as we explore themes and express ideas in art. I can’t wait to see what you have to communicate!
