Our morning will start out with a brief art history discussion about the ways artists have depicted the ocean and the sky. Students will look for similarities and clues as to how to handle this complex subject. Next, students will review types of clouds and tips for painting the ocean. There will be a brief series of demos in watercolor on various surfaces - watercolor paper, aqua board, clay board, and gold watercolor ground on board. Throughout the rest of the class, students will complete several small studies of their choice. Students are encouraged to work from their own reference material. Individual technical, compositional, and color guidance will be provided.

  • Students may purchase aqua boards, clay boards, and use of gold ground from the instructor for $12.
  • Please bring professional quality watercolors, a range of brushes (you will be painting fairly small), and good quality watercolor paper.
Suggested colors of paint: Holbein Lavender, Holbein China Pink, Holbein or Windsor Newton Cobalt Turquoise, Winsor Newton - Indigo, Cobalt, Cerulean, Permanent Rose, Quinacridone Gold, Transparent Yellow, Brunt Sienna, Hematite Genuine by Daniel Smith
