The focus of this intensive workshop will be on painting a floral still life from direct observation, fostering active response, full engagement, and letting go of expectations for a perfect painting.

Tracy will share a loose workflow, which includes:
-Exploratory drawing
-Mixing color
- First layer of color
-Extended looking and layering

We will also discuss such things as active looking, composition, value structure and color harmony, among other topics.

Each class will include some discussion and painting demonstrations, as well as time to paint. Tracy will bring flowers you can use to make your own still life setup. Bring a favorite vase or vessel and at the end of the class on Sunday, you can take your arrangement home.

Tracy will be using oil paint, but all painting and drawing mediums are welcome (though the primary focus will be on oils). All levels of experience are welcome but some experience with oil paint is recommended.

  • Please Note:  This class is planned as an in person class and we expect that it will run the full semester in person.  However, there is an ongoing need to adhere to guidance and safety practices in order to safely manage the COVID-19 situation.  The guidelines from state government and public health authorities change as time progresses and the CAC may need to make adjustments accordingly.  It is possible that this class will transition to an online format at some point during the semester.  In this case, tuition refunds will not be issued unless the CAC is unable to provide the same number of class sessions as initially planned either in person or in a remote format.
  • Contact the CAC with any material questions.

STILL LIFE/Vase: Tracy will supply the flowers. Bring a favorite vase or vessel. On Sunday, you can bring your arrangement home. These are the materials I typically use. You don’t need to purchase all of them. Use what you have and use this as a guide if you want to try something new. Please note: I sometimes add or change the materials that I use.

PIGMENTS: Cadmium Yellow Medium, Cadmium Red Ligh, Transparent Earth Yellow, Transparent Earth Red or Transparent Oxide Red, Sap Green, Ultramarine, Alizarin Crimson or Alizarin Permanent; sometimes Permanent or Quinacridone magenta, Phthalo Green or Viridian, Titanium White, Yellow ochre Violet gray Raw umber.

MEDIUM: Lately I’ve been using no medium or just a small amount of refined linseed oil. I sometimes use Original Liquin or Gamblin’s Solvent Free Gel medium. THINNER Odorless mineral spirits (such as Gamsol).

BRUSHES/KNIVES: I use a range of different brushes, mostly bristle brushes or white synthetics. I tend towards larger sizes in flats and brights. I like large brushes that are 1/2-inch wide or larger (I use a flat Blick Mega brush). I also like Blick Scholastic Wonder White brushes. I use some smaller brushes also – it varies.

PALETTE/PAINTING KNIVES: You can use any painting or palette knife you like. I use knives both for mixing paint and for painting. I recommend a steel palette knife, 3" trowel with a deep bend in the handle. My favorite is the RGM Palette knife no. 80, but it has become difficult to find.

PALETTE: 12x16 gray palette. This can be gray-toned wood, glass or disposable gray palette.

SUPPORTS/CANVAS: If you want to paint on a less expensive option, Arches Oil Paper, Centurion Oil Primed Linen Pads are good options. You can also paint on loose linen taped to board. For more developed paintings, I typically like to paint on a rigid, non-absorbent support. I like Ampersand Gessobords, RayMar art panels (the linen especially), or ¼” birch that I prepare myself by sealing and gessoing. I also sometimes buy prepared birch panels with linen mounted to them. Arches oil paper is a good option, but it’s a little more absorbent than I typically like.

DRAWING MATERIALS: Some form of drawing materials – just a sketchpad and a few pencils will do. I typically use Nitram charcoal, and/or a soft Blackwing Matte graphite pencil, and graphite pencils in HB, 4B, 6, 8B. The drawing we may do is in preparation for painting, so nothing elaborate is needed.
