Drawing, making a mark, is basic in our human makeup, we have been making marks since the dawn of time. The pencil, so common, all it does is make a mark, so simple and yet, with it you can create to the very limits of your imagination! Drawing is the language of seeing; both what our eyes see and what we "see" internally. We all have this ability. This fun course will make the connection between the external and internal means of seeing and making. The emphasis of this course is making marks that will lead to a well developed composition. The distance from the first mark to the last mark will be determined by your persistence, determination, and imagination. We will work with a specific set of drawing tools that will allow you to explore both your innermost passions and your outer limits of imagination. There will be various elements to inspire you along the way including still life, image reference, guided exercise, group and individual critiques, all of which are merely guides to help you launch your imaginations and discover your creativity.

  • The CAC will be closed April 3-8 for spring break.

Please Note:  This class is planned as an in person class and we expect that it will run the full semester in person.  However, there is an ongoing need to adhere to guidance and safety practices in order to safely manage the COVID-19 situation.  The guidelines from state government and public health authorities change as time progresses and the CAC may need to make adjustments accordingly.  It is possible that this class will transition to an online format at some point during the semester.  In this case, tuition refunds will not be issued unless the CAC is unable to provide the same number of class sessions as initially planned either in person or in a remote format.

Keener, Joel

Residing and working in Claymont Delaware, Joel considers himself to be a realist with a traditional fine art background. Having worked in various mediums from pencil to cast bronze sculpture, his passion for art began in high school and after 57 years, this passion is vibrant as ever.  After serving in Viet Nam, he was accepted to college and further graduated with a Master's in Fine Arts Degree in Sculpture. Joel has exhibited internationally, and his work adorns numerous private collections. Now retired from teaching fine art and design in higher education, he devotes much of his time to sculpture and drawing. He has crafted his drawing techniques which he calls energy drawings and messy lines to a fine art teachable discipline. His energy drawings won him numerous awards in numerous Science Fiction and Fantasy Art shows from 1998 to 2012. He subscribes to the idea that with this technique, almost anyone can create dynamic and beautiful drawings. His drawings range from softly toned nudes and portraits to wildly abandoned pencil and eraser strokes that burst from the paper and draw the viewer into the work with intriguing detail. https://myownlines.com
