In this 8-week short course, we’ll explore techniques for using the palette knife to achieve exciting effects in oil and acrylic. Whether you’ve used a knife before or not, we’ll look at the different kinds of knives and how to use them to paint still life, landscapes, and more – often in combination with traditional brushes. You will be amazed at how easy and useful knives are and how they bring energy and excitement to your paintings! The accent in this class will be on fun, learning, and painting in low-stress, relaxed environment.

  • Please Note:  This class is planned as an in person class and we expect that it will run the full semester in person.  However, there is an ongoing need to adhere to guidance and safety practices in order to safely manage the COVID-19 situation.  The guidelines from state government and public health authorities change as time progresses and the CAC may need to make adjustments accordingly.  It is possible that this class will transition to an online format at some point during the semester.  In this case, tuition refunds will not be issued unless the CAC is unable to provide the same number of class sessions as initially planned either in person or in a remote format.
    1. One or more palette knife(s) with a straight-edge, at least 1+ inch long, or longer. Optional: a knife with one 90-degree angle (for painting corners).
    2. Bring the paint type of your choice: oil, water-mixable oil, or acrylic. A full suite of colors isn’t necessary, but your choice. (If you’re new to palette knives, a simpler palette can be easier to work with.)
    3. Your preference of painting surface: either canvas, panel, or paper (if you prefer to work on a tabletop). Bring more than one surface per class.

Optional: paper towels and/or wet-wipes for cleanup. (If you use paint solvent or thinner)
