Visible Mindful Mending

Summer Workshop | This course has been canceled

Fashion is responsible for 9% of global emissions and up to 1/5 of global water pollution. 90% of dyes are made from petrochemicals. What can we do as a "post consumer" to contribute to a greener, sustainable future? Repair our clothes! On average a SINGLE MEND increases the life of a garment for 1.5 years. Join me, by not just repairing your beautiful, beloved garment, but by making the mend visible, starting a conversation with others about how to slow down our fashion habit. The class will include a look at the repair and slow fashion movements.

Class #1 Patching and Stitching-

For worn or torn garment we'll mend with sashiko style stitching (with japanese needle and thread). Best for Jeans, cottons and linens (no synthetics or stretchy jeans, but up to 5% stretch is okay). Embroidery thread can be used, but will not create as much durability for tough wear (knee holes etc).

Class #2 Darning

Learn a simple, age old needle weaving technique, applied for a surprisingly beautiful visible mend. Best for sweaters, scarves, hats and other knits with moth holes, worn elbow

  • Material Fee:

$10 cash at the first class- pay instructor. Includes Japanese Sashiho thread and needle and patching materials.

  • Please Note: This class is planned as an in person class and we expect that it will run the full semester in person.  However, there is an ongoing need to adhere to guidance and safety practices in order to safely manage the COVID-19 situation.  The guidelines from state government and public health authorities change as time progresses and the CAC may need to make adjustments accordingly.  It is possible that this class will transition to an online format at some point during the semester.  In this case, tuition refunds will not be issued unless the CAC is unable to provide the same number of class sessions as initially planned either in person or in a remote format.
  • Class members should bring their garments to repair (no synthetics, or up to 5% synthetic maximum, for patching class), sewing scissors, ruler and fabric marker.

All additional materials provided by instructor- $10 material fee required.
