Light and Shadow: Charcoal and Graphite Still Life

Spring Workshop | Available

We will begin by learning to identify, name, and draw the parts of light and shadow on basic forms like boxes, cylinders, and spheres. After a quick lunch break, we will expand on that basic knowledge to draw a still life using charcoal, pencil, and erasers, using a technique where we build up shadow and "carve" out the light from a piece of toned paper. A written review lesson will be sent by the instructor after the workshop for no additional charge.

    • Drawing paper pad, 12 x 18"
    • A few pieces of thick vine charcoal
    • Paper towels, or chamois cloth
    • Pink pearl eraser
    • Kneaded eraser
    • Dark graphite pencil, such as Ebony, or 6B, or 8B
    • Optional: White charcoal
    • Optionally, you can bring an interesting object to add to the still life!
