Sage Kelsey
Born on a horse and sheep farm in Maryland, I was the youngest of 5 incredibly gifted children. Moving to Rose Valley in 1962, I grew up backstage midst the greasepaint, costumes, props, set construction, and productions of Hedgerow Theatre. I apprenticed into the arts through my whole family and hold myself in great debt to them. I was fortunate to attend Nether Providence in the mid-70s where a handful of remarkable and caring teachers created and maintained an Alternative School in the public school system. Those particular teachers nurtured and taught those of us who marched to a different drum. I thrived in that system and was put in full charge of the Arts Department. They encouraged me to work with peers and children and to sell my work. I spent 5 years teaching art, outdoor skills, and horseback riding at the Brandywine Valley YMCA Camps in Downingtown.
In 1982 I began 20 years of serious work with my second love – horses. I continue to train and work part-time with these great creatures. In 1999 my childhood friend, Robert Deane, a master Potter and a brilliant teacher, introduced me to the craft of Pottery. Once again in my life I was lucky to come into contact with passionate and talented people who avail themselves to the community to enlighten and teach.
I continue to take classes at the Art Center where I also teach Art, Pottery and Sculpture to children and adults during the week. I teach acting classes at the Hedgerow Theatre for children Saturday mornings; I teach horsemanship at Rattlebox Nature Center in Media during the summer and continue to train horses privately. At the International Academy of Ballet in Aston, I work in Lighting Design and Tech.
