Sketching in Ink & Watercolor

Enjoy the fun of sketching landscapes, interiors or architecture with ink and watercolor — a technique that has the visual appeal of both drawing and painting and is the basis of much “urban sketching”, an increasingly popular practice. The class will include choosing a subject, creating a composition, line quality, paint handling, and both a methodical and loose approach. The class also includes an easy to learn introduction to linear perspective. The class will involve demonstration by the instructor as well as individual instruction at each students level of ability.
Please bring these recommended materials to class:
- Pencils, 2H & HB
- Kneaded eraser (or white “plastic” eraser)
- Pigment liners (Pigma Micron or similar), sizes 01, 03 and 05 or similar. Or — alternatively — a fountain pen that can be filled from bottled ink. (some suggestions: Twsbi Eco or Lamy Safari pens with a fine or medium point); and waterproof ink, (some examples: DeAtramentis Document Ink or Noodler’s Black). These can be ordered online. - Watercolor paper or sketchbook, 9x12”, 11x14” or similar, hot press or cold press surface, at least 140lb/300gsm weight
- watercolors, tubes or pans, (student grade paints, like Cotman, are OK for this class) Suggested colors (others are fine): Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow (hue is OK), Alizarin Crimson (hue is OK), Cadmium Red Light or Pale (hue is OK), Sap Green, Burnt Sienna, Yellow Ochre
- Watercolor brushes, synthetics are fine, suggested sizes: Flat: 3/4”, 1/4”; Round: #12, #6; Rigger (Liner): #3
- Watercolor palette with generous mixing area
- Container for water
Charley Parker
Charley Parker studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. For the past several years he has been teaching at the Delaware Art Museum, the Delaware College of Art and Design and Jester Artspace.
