Wheel Throwing 101

Spring Class | Available

If you have never thrown a pot on the wheel, or if you've tried it in the past and felt like trying it again - this class is for you! The following basic techniques are covered in this course: wedging, centering, opening, pulling, creating and trimming. You will also learn a lot about low fire and high fire glazing. No pressure, no syllabus, no expectations, just a chance to be creative in a judge free environment!

Schedule Notes:
The Community Arts Center will be closed for Spring Break from 3/29/26-4/5/26.
No class on Wednesday 4/1/26.
No class 5/20/26. Makeup will be held 6/17/26.
Substitute teacher on 5/27/26 - Pat Hoban.

  • Clay is not included in lab fee. Clay is to be purchased through the office. Purchase can be made via email, by phone and/or in person during office hours. Please note specific clay body when placing order. Porcelain clay bodies (257 and 437) are priced at $60 per unit. Non-porcelain clay bodies are priced at $35 per unit. Purchase in advance of class and present receipt to instructor before collecting clay.

    Please note: Students who wish to fire work in the soda kiln and are currently registered in a class that is not soda kiln specific can do so for an additional $20 fee/semester. Only available to students who have previously taken a soda specific class or workshop at CAC.
  • Basic ceramic tools which can be purchased at CAC, aprons or bath towels can be brought to protect clothing and a positive attitude!
Mary Martin

Mary Martin has been working with clay for over 40 years, bringing both experience and passion to her teaching. She began teaching at the Arts Center 12 years ago, starting with teen classes and leading creative craft birthday parties. Over time, her focus has evolved to teaching Adult Beginner Pottery (101), where she enjoys helping new students discover the joy of working with clay.

Mary is a retired high school counselor and currently serves as an advisor at the college level, bringing a strong background in education and mentorship to her classes. A lifelong resident of Media, she values community and connection, which is reflected in her welcoming and supportive teaching style.
