Course Description

In this soft pastel workshop we will focus on loosening up your artist style! Whether you're a beginner or an experienced pastel artist looking to break free from tight, detailed work, this class will offer practical tips, exercises and inspiration to help you paint with more expression, spontaneity and confidence.

Required Supplies

Please bring the following with you to class:
set of soft/dry pastels (any brand or mix - Sennelier, Unison, Terry Ludwig, NuPastels, etc...) (NOT oil)
SANDED Paper such as Art Spectrum, Dakota, UART, etc… If your local art supply store doesn’t have it Amazon generally has a quick turnaround. Type in SANDED PASTEL PAPER, if using UART I recommend 400 or 500 grit. Sanded paper will give you more room for error and it has a coated backing which will work well with the alcohol.
cheap paint brush #2 or #3
Isopropyl alcohol 90%
glass jar or plastic container to hold Isopropyl alcohol
photo reference in color and black and white

OPTIONAL:
Glove or Glove lotion (This is recommended that you use one or the other for skin protection) (“Gloves in a Bottle” or any mechanic’s barrier cream from Pep Boys or auto parts store also works nicely)
Blending Stumps or Tortillons (again you can buy and share a package of them)
Sketching Board with clip to hold paper
Glassine, Tracing or Wax Paper (in a pinch) for protecting your art

Madeleine Kelly's Website
An artist and educator, Madeleine Kelly resides and teaches in her Southeastern Pennsylvania studio and often paints from local inspirations. She believes art is passion, discovery, evolution and an endless journey and loves to explore the versatility of multiple mediums. Her greatest joys are playing with textures and color. Although her inspirational triggers are everywhere it is “often the medium itself that drives me”. Madeleine’s works are impressionistic and at times can push the abstract perimeters. Her paintings have been selected for various national and international juried exhibitions. Recipient to numerous awards, among them the Helen Farr Sloan Award for the 2014 Philadelphia Water Color Society International Show, as well as best in show at the 2024 Philadelphia Pastel Society National Exhibition.
She is a signature member of the Philadelphia Water Color Society and Maryland Pastel Society. She has been published in magazines and newspapers including a Philadelphia Inquirer feature “Madeleine Kelly paints her future with bold strokes" July 2010; an American Artist magazine April 2010 - "Maintain a Beginner’s Sense of Adventure", and the Philadelphia Stories magazine. Her artwork can be seen gracing the set of a feature 2013 indie film; “The Suspect”. Madeleine holds an elected board position with Philadelphia Water Color Society.
