Constructing & Carving Clay for Handbuilders

Course Description

Using slab, coil and other clay construction techniques, students will build a foundation for experimenting and learning the many techniques of clay. Carving can create sculptural work and provide interesting surface treatments. Techniques for many options will be explored.

Schedule Notes:

This is a 12-week class meeting on nonconsecutive Thursdays from 9/17/26 to 12/10/26.
No class on 11/26/26.
The Community Arts Center will be closed for Thanksgiving Break from 11/26/26-11/28/26.

Special Notes

Clay is not
included in lab fee. Creek Clay can be purchased with registration.
All other
clay bodies must be purchased through the office on the first day of class or as needed. Purchase can be made via
email, by phone and/or in person during office hours. Please note specific clay
body when placing order. Porcelain clay bodies (257 and 437) are priced at $60
per unit. Non-porcelain clay bodies are priced at $35 per unit. Present receipt to instructor before collecting clay.

Please note: Students who wish to fire work in the soda kiln and are currently
registered in a class that is not soda kiln specific can do so for an
additional $25 fee/semester. Only available to students who have previously
taken a soda specific class or workshop at CAC.

Required Supplies

Please bring basic clay tools, available for purchase at the CAC.

Bob Deane

Bob Deane's Website Bob Deane is a potter and painter who was raised in the Media, PA area. He earned a B.F.A in Ceramics from Bloomsburg University in 1988. His work has been shown in many local stores and galleries. Recently, Bob has been immersed in working with local creek clay and discovering the connection between the ground he walks on and the artwork he creates. He currently teaches at the Community Arts Center in Wallingford, PA, at the Mainline Art Center and the Wayne Arts Center both on Philadelphia’s Main Line. Bob has been a member of the Wallingford Potter’s Guild since 1991.
