Oil & Acrylic Painting Exploration

Experience the thrill of color, texture, and light! Learn new strategies to improve your painting. Use oil paint or acrylic, your choice! Fine-tune your skills with the palette to better express yourself. Instructor demonstrations and art history discussions will whet your appetite to paint! Art History will also be used to show examples of concepts being taught in class.

This class meets 12 times on nonconsecutive Wednesdays from 9/16/20 to 12/9/26.

The Community Arts Center will be closed for Thanksgiving break from 11/26/26-11/28/26.
- You can choose to work in oil OR acrylic paint. Additional supplies required for oil paint are noted below.
Please bring the following materials to class:
Student grade oil paint OR acrylic paint: Titanium white (Big tube), Cadmium red, Cadmium yellow, French ultramarine blue, Viridian, Alizarin crimson, Ivory black (small tube), Yellow ochre, Burnt sienna
Odorless mineral spirits *if using oil paint
Small jar of linseed oil *if using oil paint
Double palette cup to hold mineral spirits and linseed oil *if using oil paint
Water mister or spray bottle with fine spray setting *if using acrylics
Metal Palette knife, trowel-like
Uneven diamond blade, approximately 1 1/2 inches long
Paper towels
Empty lidded jar
Two flat and two round brushes #'s 4 and 6

John Meehan
John T. Meehan III was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.He graduated from Tyler School of Art, Temple University’s art school, in 1982 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting.
He painted and worked various part-time jobs, eventually coaching gymnastics full-time. John met his future wife while painting on the beach in Cape May, New Jersey two weekends before starting graduate school at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
In 1993, he received a Masters of Fine Arts in Painting. He stopped coaching when he got married in 1994. His career as a stay-at-home father began in May of 1996, while teaching evening art classes at various places. After the birth of his second child, he taught only at the Community Art Center in Wallingford two nights a week.
John's paintings can be seen at Wildflower Too Gallery in Barnegat Light NJ and The Main Street Gallery in Manasquan NJ.
