Explore the mosaic process with an emphasis on controlled cutting and shaping of ceramic and glass tiles to create rhythmic designs. David will introduce you to mosaic traditions and techniques that inspire his work, such as patterns in Islamic designs and Amish quilts. Students will have a choice for what they want to mosaic – whether it is a functional piece like a picture frame, or a decorative mosaic plaque.

  • Please Note:  This class is planned as an in person class and we expect that it will run the full semester in person.  However, there is an ongoing need to adhere to guidance and safety practices in order to safely manage the COVID-19 situation.  The guidelines from state government and public health authorities change as time progresses and the CAC may need to make adjustments accordingly.  It is possible that this class will transition to an online format at some point during the semester.  In this case, tuition refunds will not be issued unless the CAC is unable to provide the same number of class sessions as initially planned either in person or in a remote format.
  • All materials to create basic projects will be provided. A materials fee of $10 will be paid to the instructor on the first day of class.

David Woods is a mosaic artist and has his Master’s in art education at Arcadia University. He’s designed and installed mosaics with the Mural Arts Program all over the city of Philadelphia and surrounding areas, most prominently working on the Philadelphia Eagles yearly mural project. With the Community Arts Center he has worked on outreach projects with Chester Charter School for the Arts and the South Media Community Initiative, and installed mosaics throughout our children’s garden and studios with kids in the Children’s committee and summer spree programs. He also teaches adult and teen mosaic classes at the CAC.
