Learn about Penn State's founding president, Evan Pugh (1859-64), who succeeded in establishing the institution as the model agricultural college in America, in the midst of the Civil War. A native Pennsylvanian and European-trained scientist, he set the highest academic standard for the school and secured the land-grant status which defines the University to this day.
