Care and Handling of Family Treasures
1 Session | This program is completed
Do you have a family treasure in poor condition? Ever wonder how to mend a page tear properly or strengthen a weak binding on a book? If the answers are "yes," please join the University Libraries' Conservation staff as they provide a tour of the Conservation Centre and share techniques to mend, sleeve, surface clean, remove mold, and air-dry wet materials.
Sue Kellerman serves as the Judith O. Sieg Chair for Preservation and head of the Preservation, Conservation, and Digitization Department at the Penn State Libraries. She has spent the past thirty-three years preserving the Libraries' collections and has presented, taught sessions, and offered recommendations on the care and handling of family treasures across central PA for most of her career.
Bill Minter joined the Penn State Libraries in 2014 as the senior book conservator. Earlier, he owned his own bookbinding and conservation business, specializing in rare book and manuscript conservation. His experience includes working on collections at the Library of Congress, the National Park Service, and many academic institutions.
- Attendees are encouraged to have two family documents and photographs in need of conservation treatment to show and discuss.
