On the morning of September 11, 2001, United Airlines Flight 93 crashed into an open field in Somerset County, Pennsylvania, killing all passengers, crew members, and terrorists on board. Because of the quick and determined actions of the 40 passengers and crew aboard, Flight 93 was the only one of the four hijacked aircraft that failed to reach the terrorists' intended target that day -- the U.S. Capitol. The Flight 93 National Memorial stands to honor the passengers and crew who showed unity, courage, and defiance in the face of adversity. The Memorial tour includes the Visitors Center, Wall of Names, and Tower of Voices.

Picnic lunch at Green Gables Restaurant
Choice of Ham & Swiss or Turkey & Cheddar sandwich, plus potato chips, fruit, cookie, and a drink.
In the event of inclement weather, indoor seating will be available.

On July 24, 2002, eighteen coal miners at the Quecreek Mine in Somerset County accidentally dug into an abandoned, poorly documented mine, flooding the room and pillar mine with an estimated 75 million gallons of water. Nine miners were able to escape before the tunnel was completely flooded. Nine were not. Visit the rescue site and learn of the courage, determination, and teamwork that enabled the miners to survive and dozens of rescuers to work day and night to bring them to the surface. Note: participants will not be entering the mine.

  • Flight 93 National Memorial and Green Gables Restaurant are fully accessible. Quecreek Mine Rescue Site may have steps and rough ground in certain places.
