National Defense: The Truman Doctrine and Containment Theory
1 Session | This program is completed
The topic of national defense is not limited to those in the profession of arms, and its successes are not limited to those engaged in geopolitical strategy and policy-making. Rather, the topic is an ongoing study involving militaries, political administrations, national and world economies, and certainly the complex approach of achieving political and economic goals using military prowess. The Truman Doctrine is a piece of national defense policy and execution that had, and continues to have, impacts beyond the 20th century. In this presentation, Gum will explore the Doctrine within the context it was written and implemented, and briefly touch on contemporary issues that it continues to influence.
Instructor: Tyler Gum is the director of the Pennsylvania Military Museum. While growing up, he could be found scampering across the tanks in front of the Museum or standing in awe of the World War I trench in the museum. Jump forward a decade or so, and he now has the good fortune to help lead the Museum into the future. Prior to his appointment at the Pennsylvania Military Museum, Tyler worked for the National Park Service, has been involved with corporate relations and legislative affairs, and was a lecturer at Penn State Altoona.
This course is being offered for free in partnership with the Pennsylvania Military Museum. Pre-registration is required.
