Come learn some of the basics of sign language! Have fun learning some signs and how to finger spell and count, and gain a basic understanding of the differences between sign language, American Sign Language (ASL), and Signing Exact English (SEE).

Instructor: Sharon Salter retired from State College Area School District, where she finished her career as the director of special education. Over her 41 years in public education, Sharon taught students with a variety of disabilities, although her first love was teaching children who were deaf/hearing impaired, and she is fluent in sign language. She has taught in Indiana, New York, Texas, and Ohio, and was an elementary principal and special education administrator in Ohio and Pennsylvania.

Course dates are Thursdays, March 21, 28, April 4, 11, 18, 25, May 2, 9. May 9 will held in-person at the Penn State Outreach Building from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Events to be determined (possibly a silent lunch and viewing of the movie CODA).


  • Please wear a solid-color shirt because it will make it easier to see each other's hands more clearly. The class is set up as a Zoom meeting, and participants are requested to show their Zoom video for the duration of the course.The last session on May 9 will held in person at the Penn State Outreach Building. Activities to be determined (possibly a silent lunch and viewing of the movie CODA).
