The Te Araroa Trail is New Zealand’s “Long Trail,” traversing 1,800 miles of the island country from north to south and passing through remote wilderness areas, farming regions, and major cities alike. Shari hiked the trail in 2023 and shares tales of New Zealand’s unique plants, animals, geology, and culture — along with some hair-raising adventures! Whether you’re planning your next through-hike or just curious about New Zealand/Aotearoa, you’re invited to join us.

Instructor: Shari Edelson has been at Penn State since 2013. Formerly the director of horticulture and operations at The Arboretum at Penn State, Shari is now a Ph.D. student in the recreation, parks, and tourism management department, and is researching human impacts in wilderness areas. A regular OLLI volunteer, Shari has taught a variety of horticulturally focused coursees, including seasonal plant ID and pruning techniques.
