Learn to Knit: Basics

2 Session | FULL

Learn the basics of knitting in this two-session course. You will learn how to cast on, complete knit and purl stitches, increase and decrease stitches, and bind off. The instructor and helpers will demonstrate and watch you practice during the first session. Then you can practice more on your own and bring back your knitting with any questions or concerns about those various techniques to the second session.

Course dates are Mondays, October 28 and November 11 with skipping a week in between to practice in between.

Instructors: Carla Rossi, a 1982 graduate of Penn State, and now retiree, spent most of her career at Penn State in the Corporate Controller’s office. She learned to knit as a child at a local knitting shop near her hometown of North Apollo, Pennsylvania. She has knitted many things through the years, including lots of baby blankets and afghans. Carla participants in the OLLI knitting and crocheting SIG, where she enjoys seeing other people’s projects and is hoping to finally be able to successfully knit socks.

Deb Smith is a retired elementary teacher and science educator. She started knitting as a Girl Scout and is currently part of two groups knitting scarves and hats to send to mothers and children in Ukraine.

Fran Cooley started sewing when she was about seven in 4-H. Over the years, Fran learned embroidery, needlepoint, quilting, and needle felting. Following retirement, Fran learned to knit and continues to enjoy all "needle-work."

Sue Braun learned to knit from her mom and likes to knit all sorts of things - stuffed animals, baby and adult sweaters, even hats for cats.  Her favorite knits to give as gifts are Nittany Lion and Little Lion baby hats.  She is a member of the OLLI knitting and crocheting SIG.

  • Bring your own yarn and a pair of straight knitting needles, preferably in a size range of 8–10. Scraps and Skeins often has yarn and needles at low cost or free.
