Of Rocks and Rembrandt

2 Session | FULL

Examine the relationships between art and the earth sciences from 30,000 years ago to contemporary art fraud. Bob will concentrate on graphic arts, especially painting, but he will touch on sculpture, installations, and other art forms as well.

Instructor: Bob Schmalz is a professor emeritus of geology at Penn State. He is a chemical oceanographer who has taught courses in elementary geology, marine geology, and aqueous geochemistry. Although he is not an art historian, he has a lifelong interest in the fine arts and is fascinated by the many ways geology has contributed to art and the arts, in turn, have contributed to the earth sciences. With abundant visual examples, he will share his thoughts and observations with the class.
