In-Depth Walking Tour of The Arboretum at Penn State

1 Session | Registration opens 3/3/25 8:00 AM EST

Join a group of garden enthusiasts for an in-depth walking tour of the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens. Participants will gain insight into the history of the beginnings of the Arboretum as a public garden. The tour is about the stories of the design and construction process — how the space moved from a football parking lot and farm fields to the beautiful Arboretum.

Instructor: Jude Larkin holds both undergraduate (1977) and graduate (1997) degrees in landscape architecture from Penn State. She is a retired project manager from Penn State’s Office of the Physical Plant. She has steered the design and construction of the H.O. Smith Botanic Gardens from the first Master Plan (2001) to the completion of the Pollinator Bird Garden (2021). Jude has guided many in-depth tours and captivates visitors with her unique perspective. She genuinely enjoys sharing her passion for the Arboretum.

Activity level for the course is substantial outdoor walking and standing for the duration of the tour. Accessible areas.

  • Wear comfortable shoes and clothing suitable for warm weather. A sun hat and sunscreen are recommended. Please bring a water bottle. Paid visitor parking is through ParkMobile (95106)/Pay station in the lot adjacent to the Katz Law Building. Parking is also available at the East Parking Deck with a short walk to the Arboretum.
