This course combines Jan’s passions for movies and for social psychological concepts and research to help bring the latter to life. Explore four topics: conformity and the costs of deviance (12 Angry Men), stereotyping of older adults (Inside Out 2), precarious manhood (Barbie), and benevolent sexism (Titanic). Jan will present characters and clips from these movies to connect with each topic, so participants will not need to have seen them to participate in the course.

Instructor: Jan Yoder earned her Ph.D. in psychology in 1974 and spent the next 40 years of her career teaching undergraduate and graduate students. She was the recipient of five teaching awards, often drawing on popular examples to bring social psychological ideas and research to life for her students.
