Keystone of War: Altoona and the Civil War

1 Session | Registration opens 3/3/25 8:00 AM EST

Established on the eve of America’s deadliest conflict, Altoona, Pennsylvania, was destined to become a hub of industrial, political, and military activity during the 1860s. This engaging course brings to life the dramatic tales of railroaders, soldiers, southern sympathizers, enslaved freedom seekers, governors, and Underground Railroad conductors during that volatile era in national history. Though many of the sites associated with this saga are long gone, photos, documents, and stories remain as vivid testimony to the Pennsylvania experience during the Civil War. Join Dr. Jared Frederick on an incredible journey that is 175 years in the making.

Instructor: Dr. Jared Frederick is an author, YouTube host, and assistant teaching professor of history at Penn State Altoona.
