Hockey 101

1 Session | FULL

Ice hockey has been around for a long time; however, to many, it is still a mystery. This course will cover the basic rules of hockey (offsides, icing, penalties, etc.) along with a description of the different positions, the playing surface, and the equipment used by the players.

Instructor: Rodney Martin is the public address announcer for Penn State men’s and women’s hockey. He has been involved with Penn State hockey ever since he arrived on campus as a student in 1996. Before the transition to Division 1, he was a member of the Hockey Management Association, which was responsible for game presentation and operations. He served as team statistician, penalty box coordinator, and gameday operations coordinator during that time.

  • As a follow-up to the course, attend the “Hockey 101” day at the Penn State Women’s Hockey home game on Saturday, February 8, during which more insight into the game will be provided while the action is taking place on the ice. Admission to the game is free.
