Planning for Your Backyard Chickens

1 Session | Registration opens 3/3/25 8:00 AM EST

Planning for the adventure of laying hens in your backyard is half of the fun! From cute, fuzzy balls that make a tremendous noise, to that golden first egg, the process can be very enjoyable. That first cup of coffee in the morning with their company will set anyone up for a good day. Terri will present an outline of items to consider, hopefully amuse participants with pictures, and share her planning challenges due to moving. There should be time to discuss and ask questions. Terri hopes that giving some pointers and help with planning for your future flock will make the process successful and rewarding.

Instructor: Terri Cravener pursued a B.S. in Animal Science and an M.S. in Nutrition in the mid-eighties here at Penn State. Deciding to stay in Happy Valley, her career then included 25 years of conducting poultry research trials at Penn State. Terri chose to mix it up and managed a research lab in the College of Health and Human Development that focused on preventing childhood obesity. On a personal level, Terri enjoyed raising backyard poultry with her three daughters for many years. Since retiring, Terri has dedicated more time to organic gardening and also wants to re-establish a backyard laying hen flock.
