Purple Lizard: Mapmaking in the Twenty-First Century

Purple Lizard Maps is dedicated to making beautiful maps of special places for people who want to make the most of their outdoor recreation. Founder Michael Hermann will explain his cartographic process from the initial planning, meeting with stakeholders, doing the fieldwork, and working through final design and publication.
Instructor: Michael Hermann, award-winning cartographer, founded Purple Lizard Maps in 1997 with a mission to push the boundaries of modern recreational map design. Michael received his B.A. in geography with a focus on digital cartography from Penn State (1995) and launched his career as a digital cartographic specialist with Trails Illustrated/National Geographic Maps in Colorado. He has also had a career in academics, working as a cartographer for Penn State and the University of Maine. Michael is among the leading cartographers working today. The Purple Lizard Maps team combines old-world artistry and real-world field research with modern digital design, creating exceptional user-friendly maps that earn national and international design awards.
