1404 ONLINE Behind the scenes at the historic Armsby Respiration Calorimeter

1 Session | Registration opens 8/26/25 12:01 AM EDT

Join us for a virtual visit to the Armsby Respiration Calorimeter. Located on historic Ag Hill, this building and the research instrument contained therein was proposed in 1898, opened in 1902, and used actively in research and discovery for over 60 years. Today the site engages audiences of all ages in the science and history of animal science, animal and human nutrition, chemistry, biochemistry, engineering, and architecture. In this virtual visit, Curator Rita Graef will take us inside to explore the workings of this 118 year-old-building.

Rita Graef, curator of the Pasto Agricultural Museum, stewards a collection of objects that demonstrate life and work through the 1930s, connecting the science and history of agriculture to the present day

  • The Armsby Respiration Calorimeter Museum located on Curtin Road, between Armsby and Patterson Buildings is typically open only by appointment. This OLLI program will visit the historic site that played a critical role in early agricultural science and research. This is a rare opportunity to step inside the instrument used for over sixty years to understand the factors involved in metabolism and advance animal and human nutrition.
