Raptor Migration at Stone Mountain
1 Session | Registration opens 8/25/25 8:00 AM EDT
Due to inclement weather, this course is rescheduled to Tuesday, October 8.
Meet at Shaver’s Creek to learn about fall hawk migration, and then participants will drive (you are responsible for your own transportation) to Stone Mountain (a 15-minute drive south) to put our new knowledge into practice. Note: The access road is a forestry dirt-and-gravel road with uneven surfaces in some areas. There are two options for hawk watching: Take a 15-minute walk over rocky terrain to the hawk watch platform. Please wear sturdy hiking boots and bring layers for warmth. Those unable to make the walk can watch near the parking lot. Bring a lawn chair.
Instructors:Jen Anderson thrives upon connections: people to people, people to themselves, and people to nature. Greg Grove is the editor for Pennsylvania Birds and eBird reviewer for Blair, Cambria, Clearfield, Huntingdon, Juniata, Mifflin, and Huntingdon Counties. Greg has been involved with the Stone Mountain HawkWatch for many years. Jon Kauffman is an assistant program director at Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center. He spends a lot of his quality time looking at birds through binoculars, which gives him a very sweet view on life.
- Dress for the weather (layers), wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots, and bring water, lunch, and binoculars. Please allow for an extra five minutes to walk from the parking area to the Center.
