Before the Nineteenth century, Irish Gaelic was one of the top 100 most spoken languages in the world.  A multitude of factors led to its decline in the Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries, including the Irish school system, emigration and even the Irish themselves choosing to kill off the language.  This course will look at a brief history of the language and explore the reasons for its decline.

Elyse Byrnes has been a hibernophile, lover of all things Ireland, for most of her life. She received her master’s degree in Irish Studies from the National University of Ireland, Galway.
