This class will share the incredible story of philosopher and editor Ruth Nanda Anshen (1900-2003). In her lofty search for “the unitary structure of all reality,” Anshen solicited participation from an amazing range of the twentieth century’s leading intellectuals, including physicist Albert Einstein, anthropologist Margaret Mead, and linguist Noam Chomsky. Historians have ignored her efforts; we will explore them. We also investigate the many inconsistencies between Anshen’s public claims and the historical record.

Joel is the Reference and Instruction Librarian at Penn State York. He is the accidental biographer of Ruth Nanda Anshen.
