The Court Martial of Colonel D'Utassy and the Redemption of a Regiment 1863
Course | This program is completed
One of a number of celebrated court martials of the Civil War involved the commander of the 39th New York Volunteer Infantry, the Garibaldi Guard. Colonel D'Utassy was indicted and brought to trial which resulted in an upheaval in the unit's command structure on the eve of the Gettysburg campaign. The talk will entail a discussion of the circumstances behind the indictment, the trial, the regiment and the new command that was put in place in time for the Battle of Gettysburg. This follows last spring's course on the 39th New York.
