“I amaze and astonish.” A. Hamilton in the musical Hamilton. Come be “amazed and astonished” at the talents of writer-composer-actor Lin-Manuel Miranda and his collaborators that made this play the record-breaking hit that it is. We’ll watch videos exploring the musical Hamilton, focusing on a variety of topics that include: motifs, themes, why rap works so well in this musical, set design and choreography. Videos will be interspersed with class discussion. Note: This class is better if you’ve already seen the musical. You can catch it on Disney+.

Josh Hooper is executive director emeritus of the Pennsylvania Environmental Resource Consortium (PERC), of which Penn State is a member institution. Prior to joining PERC, Josh worked in marketing, broadcasting, filmmaking and theater, both behind the scenes and as a performer, including at WGAL-TV’s PM Magazine, which he hosted. He did graduate work as a Directing Fellow at the American Film Institute Conservatory. He has taught two other classes for OLLI: one about the Climate Crisis and another called Monogamy, Sex, and War. Although not a devotee of musicals, he is a rabid fan of Hamilton.
