Who is Edgar Allan Poe? What made his writings so different that of all the Romantic Period writers, Poe's are the ones today's world remembers the most? We'll take a brief look at the American Romantic Literary Period, its characteristics, and how it relates to Poe. Most of the session will focus on The Raven, Poe's most popular writing, which is brought up every year in popular culture around Halloween. The Raven, is a poem that seems to tell a simple, scary, supernatural story, but does it? If time permits, we will take a look at a few of his other works.

KarenAnn Smith is an avid reader in the classics, historical fiction, history (nonfiction), science fiction, mysteries (spy and detective), and some fantasy. She has a bachelor's and a master's degree in Secondary Ed English with more than thirty years of experience in teaching high school. Her reading while in junior and senior high school was directed by her older brother Bob, who kept throwing her classics to read, which cemented her love of reading. Her second older brother, Bill, being a little jealous, also started challenging her to read other classics that he loved. She thanks them both.
