In 1620, a small band of religious dissenters left England to settle in the New World. A year after their fateful landing at Plymouth Rock, these grateful Pilgrims sat down to a three-day feast with their Native American neighbors. That event, known as The First Thanksgiving, left an enduring legacy across the country, giving rise to a beloved annual ritual of family, food, faith, and football. As you anticipate your own Thanksgiving celebration this year, take time to learn about the history, traditions, and lasting meaning of this distinctively American holiday.

In 2010 John Maietta retired from a lifelong public relations career, combining civilian employment with reserve and active-duty Army service. He then took up a new career, driven by his equally long enthusiasm for history.  In 2014, he received a master's degree in applied history from Shippensburg University.  He later taught introductory courses in world history at Shippensburg and York College of Pennsylvania.  His popular presentations on history and culture have been featured at many libraries, retirement centers, and other venues throughout the region.
