The rapid decline of local news across Pennsylvania and the nation has severely diminished the ability of people to get trusted, accurate, nonpartisan information about what's happening, how their tax dollars are being spent, and what decisions are made in their name. That has created openings for partisan and political actors to fill the void with agenda-driven information, misinformation, and disinformation. The future of news and the future of our democracy are inextricably linked. Come learn about new efforts to reinvigorate local news, and why they are pivotal to our state and nation.

Christopher Baxter is the CEO and founding editor of Spotlight PA, the largest statewide newsroom in Pennsylvania covering the state government and urgent statewide issues. The nonprofit news organization is among the most promising leading national models for reinvigorating local journalism and returning it to its roots: as a service and value to the public, answering to the public — not profit motives. In his 16 years as an investigative reporter, editor, and media executive, Baxter has routinely produced and overseen journalism that gets real results and drives significant positive change.
