Yingling will discuss the Susquehanna, Monocacy, and Patapsco Rivers and the two roads that allowed people to travel between them. From the indigenous tribes to the European settlers, people wanted to travel. Some of the earliest roads in York County were the Monocacy and Patapsco Roads. They were developed to allow for easier travel between important points. The Monocacy Road was surveyed in 1739 by then Lancaster Co., later York Co. It went from Wrightsville to York to Hanover onto Littlestown and to Frederick, MD. The Patapsco Road was surveyed in 1760 and traveled from York to Manchester, MD and on to Baltimore.
