ZOOM - Vermeer: The Interior World of Women
Course | Registration opens 1/21/2025 8:00 AM EST
Johannes Vermeer became famous for depicting the domestic interiors of 17th-century Delft. Many of his paintings feature a well-dressed woman illuminated by a nearby window. Occasionally, she is accompanied by a maid or suitor. More often, she is alone, thoughtfully reading or writing a letter, playing a musical instrument, or delicately holding jewelry. His women are also surrounded by the trappings of success, including imported objects. This presentation will discuss Vermeer’s interiors and will also consider women’s roles in the Dutch Republic of the early modern period.
