The War in Darkness: The European Air War at Night in WWII
Course | Registration opens 1/21/2025 8:00 AM EST
By the end of the summer of 1940, Britain’s army had been pushed off the continent by Germany’s victorious Blitzkrieg. Seeking a way to contest Germany’s victory, Great Britain’s answer was its Bomber Command of the Royal Air Force. Ken Weiler will discuss the shadow aspect of the Second World War, the air war at night over Western Europe. He will describe the military situation in 1940 and its progress from searchlights and anti-aircraft guns to sophisticated RADAR to the end of the conflict in May 1945. In particular, he will discuss the aircraft involved and early and later defenses.
A modest familiarity with WWII night fighter aircraft would be helpful, but is not required.
