American Paradise: A Short History of Hawaii

Course | Registration opens 1/21/2025 8:00 AM EST

Each year tourists flock to Hawaii by the millions, drawn by its warm waters, gentle breezes, and air of innocent sensuality. But popular enjoyment of the islands masks a more complicated story. Hawaii’s past has seen violence, political chicanery, and economic exploitation. This program presents the full complexity of Hawaiian history – from its volcanic birth, through the rise and fall of native kings, to the shock of Pearl Harbor and the present-day challenge of preserving the natural beauty and cherished cultural traditions of this American paradise.

John Maietta

In 2010 John Maietta retired from a lifelong public relations career, combining civilian employment with reserve and active-duty Army service. He then took up a new career, driven by his equally long enthusiasm for history.  In 2014, he received a master's degree in applied history from Shippensburg University.  He later taught introductory courses in world history at Shippensburg and York College of Pennsylvania.  His popular presentations on history and culture have been featured at many libraries, retirement centers, and other venues throughout the region.
