The 1889 Flood in Johnstown, Pennsylvania

Participants in this class will have the opportunity to:

  1. Engage in a detailed look at the epic story of the Johnstown Flood of 1889.
  2. With the aid of both historic and modern photographs and drawings, view specific sites between the dam that failed and the town it destroyed.
  3. Become familiar with key events, decisions, and actions that led to the failure of the South Fork Fishing & Hunting Club’s dam and the resulting devastation throughout the Conemaugh Valley.
  4. Reflect on the lessons learned because of this event and consider their application in the 21st century.

Mike McGough

Mike McGough was a teacher, coach, principal, and assistant superintendent in the public schools of Pennsylvania for more than 30 years. In addition to his years in public education, he was a professor of education at York College of Pennsylvania. During his fourteen years at York College, he served as an associate professor, division director, program coordinator, and the chair of the Education Department. He retired from the college in 2015 to continue his career as an educational and leadership consultant
