Everyone knows something about the fall of the ancient world, the invasions of barbarians and Islamists. The dark ages' plagues and wars, the rise of religion, the arts and humanism, the age of exploration, the Industrial Revolution, science and the wars of the twentieth century. What were society's responses? How successful were they? And in particular what specific ethical and moral qualities can humanity bring to today's crises?
