Have you ever asked yourself these questions? How do I paint loose watercolor landscapes? How do I create depth in my landscapes? How do I breathe new life into my landscapes?

If so, then this workshop is for you. Negative painting can add amazing depth to your landscapes. In this workshop we will explore the use of negative painting and why it's so important for artists to understand this essential technique. We will clearly define what negative painting is and how to see the negative shapes. You will study the importance of using creative brushstrokes, value changes, and most importantly how to incorporate negative painting into your landscapes. Learn how to paint beautiful washes that will allow you to create depth and distance.

No drawing skills required - all skill levels welcome.

  • Brushes: #8 & #10 1" flat, #6 rigger (and any brushes you like painting with)
    Paint: 2 reds, 2 blues, 2 yellows ( a set of each in warm & cool) (plus any colors you like painting with)

    These are some examples of warm vs cool colors:
    Yellow : cad med yellow vs. lemon yellow
    Red: cad med red vs. Alizarin crimson
    Blue: ultramarine blue vs. pthalo blue

    Paper: 2 pieces of 11" x 15" 140 lb watercolor paper

    Additional Supplies: pencil & eraser, masking tape or large clips & a board to hold paper, spray bottle of water, 2 water containers & paper towels, a palette with a large mixing area.

Lorraine Rimmelin

Lorraine is a New York-based artist specializing in watercolor painting. She uses an explosion of colors to capture the likeness of flowers, animals, & landscapes. Her dramatic water view paintings are inspired by her love of the south shore of Long Island where she resides in her beach side bungalow. Lorraine is a Signature Member of the North East Watercolor Society. She has had her paintings displayed in several prestigious galleries including a solo show in New York City. After a long and fulfilling career as a hair designer, colorist & salon owner, she has transformed her love of shape, color & design into an award-winning profession of limitless pleasure.
