Illustration Experimentation: A 3-Day Drawing Workshop with Jay Stuart | Tuesdays 3-6pm | 4/14-4/28 | Spring 2026
Workshops | Available
Expand your drawing practice through three distinct and powerful illustration techniques in this immersive three-day workshop. Each session focuses on a different medium, allowing students to explore expressive line, tone, and mark-making while experimenting with both contemporary and historical tools.
Day 1 introduces fineliner ink and watercolor, focusing on urban sketching techniques, line variation, layering washes, and adding atmosphere and highlights with white gouache.
Day 2 explores traditional Sumi ink and brush. Students will learn brush control, tonal range, and expressive ink handling. Instruction includes how to grind and prepare ink from a sumi stick and stone (or work from bottled ink).
Day 3 focuses on Silverpoint, the historic metalpoint medium used by masters such as Leonardo da Vinci. Participants will work on prepared gesso boards and explore the luminous, permanent quality of this unique drawing tool.
Subject matter will be provided; students may also bring personal reference material. Open to all levels.
